Jenny Agutter visited the Severn Valley Railway's Kidderminster station on Saturday 24th September
to sign copies of The Illustrated Railway Children
Jenny has contributed her Foreword to the book in return for a donation to the CF Trust by Silver Link Publishing.
The Trust will also benefit from various promotional activities connected with the books release.
Jenny has been closely associated with The Railway Children since the age of 14, when she was cast as Roberta in the BBCs serialisation of the novel. Three years later she was asked to play the same role in the classic 1970 film directed by Lionel Jeffries, and in 2000 she returned to play the role of Mother in the Carlton TV dramatisation.
In her Foreword Jenny says, Reading this centenary edition of The Railway Children with its beautifully chosen photographs from the Edwardian era, I feel we are travelling back in time. This enchanting story captures all that is best about childhood and growing up. It portrays a world where, even through adversity, everything will come all right in the end. It is a world we can return to as we turn the pages of this book.

Jenny arrived to find a bank of photographers waiting outside the front of Kidderminster station, and members of the press keen to catch a few words before moving through the booking hall to the station concourse where crowds of people were patiently waiting her arrival. Jenny had been held up on route by engineering work on the Paddington to Worcester line, her train having been 40 minutes late leaving Paddington.
Jenny was providing regular updates by mobile phone of her progress, so that the waiting crowds could be kept updated - on hearing that she had arrived at Worcester Shrub Hill and was in the car despatched from Kidderminster to meet her three cheers rang out from the good natured fans. Very soon the star was signing copies and exchanging a few words with each customer. Appropriately the children were particularly keen to chat to Jenny and seemed enthralled by her, no doubt many having seen the movies on television or even the big screen!
Having been originally scheduled to stay for just two hours, from 3-5pm, to the obvious delight of all Jenny delayed her departure until 7.30pm enabling many more people to secure a signed copy of this special centenarary edition of Edith Nesbit's classic story.
Jenny's visit to The Severn Valley Railway generated a donation to the CF Trust of over £1000 - The Severn Valley Railway generously donating all their profit made from sales of the book on the day to the Trust.
In addition to Jenny Agutter's visit The Severn Valley Railway was also host to the following authors:
John Stretton, John Hillmer, Trevor Booth, Terry Gough, Roger Siviter, Roy Avis and Will Adams who were signing copies of their books at Kidderminster, Bewdley and Bridgnorth at various times over the weekend.
