The heavy haulage steam road locomotive is one of the most impressive of road steam vehicles.
As seen today in preservation, these magnificent machines played a major part in supplying heavy components to the likes of the ship building and electricity generating industry.

In the latter part of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century the road locomotive was the only means of transporting heavy and large loads that were out of gauge for movement by rail.
In this programme a look is taken at the composition of a road locomotive plus the major manufacturing names.
Sequences are seen of engines out on the road plus some demonstration haulage shots, including the impressive sights of locomotives at full cry at The Great Dorset Steam Fair, probably the most awesome display of road steam action to be seen anywhere in the world.
The views of those who work closely with these steam giants is also taken into account as a close look is taken at three individual engines.
