MOVERS AND SHIFTERS Volume One

Movers & Shifters bears tribute to the restorers and custodians of the vast variety of vintage commercial vehicles that still exist around the UK today. These magnificent examples of our transport heritage can be seen on the roads and rally fields around the country.

• STEAM WAGON CLASSICS Steam propelled lorries were the fore runners of the juggernauts seen on today's motorways, and this feature concentrates on two of their most prolific manufacturers, Foden of Sandbach and Sentinel of Shrewsbury.

• SCAMMELL LEGENDS In the preservation world the Scammell name probably excites the enthusiasts more than any other marqué. We feature examples from this once famous vehicle builder.

• BIG EIGHTS Eight wheelers were constructed for carrying heavy loads, often being teamed up with drawbar trailers, examples of these machines are seen from the likes of Atkinson and Leyland.

• TANKER LOADS It is the exception rather than the rule for lorries to be restored in tanker form these days. However the tanker has always played an important part in road haulage and here we have examples from days gone by.

• SOUTHALL STARS The name AEC sadly no longer exists, but in the company's heyday they produced vehicles of the highest standard at their Southall factory. Still held in high regard, we see a few survivors from this once world famous company.

• TWO STROKE POWER The sound of the Foden 2-stroke engined lorry hauling a load is one of the most evocative in the world of preservation. Three such examples can be seen and heard at their best

• HEAVY MOVERS In recent years heavy commercials have given sterling displays at the Great Dorest Steam Fair. Here we see two Scammells, a Foden and the Thornycroft Antar in action at the 1998 show.
