As a sequel to his earlier volume of autobiography, Dean Forest Footplate Memories, which described his work as a loco fireman at Lydney working on the Forest branches, Bob here describes with characteristic humour and passion his subsequent career as a fireman at Gloucester Horton Road shed. He then became the last resident signalman at Woolaston box, south of Lydney, before finally transferring to the Awre permanent way gang.
But More memories of A Dean Forest Railwayman is much more than a railway book. It makes an important contribution to the social history of the area, describing the author’s latter days at work and providing an unsentimental account of the real hardships of life on the railway. It also describes the dedication and camaraderie of the old railwaymen he met and worked with in the twilight years of steam, and the hard, dirty and sometimes dangerous work involved, even in more modern era days.
