A rich and detailed account of the wide-ranging career of a lifelong railwayman. from the 1930s to the 1980s. Commencing with the duties of a "call-boy", waking railwaymen for their shifts, and progressing to cleaner and fireman, it was not long before Bill was working steam-hauled trains from Saltley to Derby, Liverpool to Carlisle, Peterborough to Crewe. As a driver on the first generation of multiple units, he went on to experience at first hand the transition from steam to diesel, and worked on many of the new locomotives through into the 1970's.
By this time he was driving High Speed Trains to London, Paddington, Basingstoke, Bristol, York, Leicester and Crewe, eventually retiring in 1985. Without doubt a most fascinating insight into the life of a dedicated railwayman, during a time of sweeping change and progression.
