The first title in the 'Rediscovering Towns and Cities' series, the author takes us on a nostalgic tour of Walsall looking at a bygone era of travel by tram and trolleybus and the early years of bus travel. As well as illustrating the changes in the transport network, the book also highlights the social and geagraphical changes that evolved in the area
Whilst many buildings in the City Centre have survived to this day, the same cannot be said for the transport networks that once served it. The introduction of pedestrianisation is the most glaringly obvious change, reflecting modern day demands. This book therefore allows us to glimpse back to the days when the the city was served by extensive tram and trolleybus networks. We are also able to observe old industrial areas and the developments in housing - from bleak Victorian housing in the industrial areas to better quality villas to the north and south east. With over 200 photographs, all extensively captioned, the very essence of Walsall in bygone years is captured in this book. Its appeal therefore goes beyond the transport enthusiast, and out to anyone interested in the history of Walsall.
