The Swindon & Cricklade Railway past and present:
the ideal time travel companion for visitors and enthusiasts!
The Midland & South Western Junction Railway of the 1880s was part of a grandiose scheme to link Manchester and Southampton by rail. In the event it went only from Andoversford near Cheltenham to Andover in Hampshire, crossing en route the beautiful Cotswold Hills. Never a prosperous line, it closed completely more than 40 years ago, and most of it has returned to nature or been redeveloped. One short stretch, however, survives, thanks to the efforts of the preservationists of the Swindon & Cricklade Railway, based at Blunsdon, near Swindon, who have relaid track and built stations from scratch in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside.
Using a rare collection of archive photographs, John Stretton describes the route from Andoversford to Marlborough, via Cirencester and Swindon, and manages to trace its long-lost course today. He also of course concentrates on the achievements at Blunsdon as the S&CR strives to expand north and south to the towns of its title.
