The Nene Valley Railway was the first line into Peterborough (1845), and was a branch from the London & Birmingham Railway at Blisworth. It ran from there to Northampton, where it met the River Nene, whose valley it followed (more or less) for the rest of its journey, serving the towns of Wellingborough, Irthlingborough, Thrapston and Oundle, with many villages besides. For them the only outlet to the world, sometimes, was the railway. Its valuable function to the community was cut off when the line closed in 1964, and now only the steam section at the Peterborough end serves to keep the memory alive. But a visit to the railway is recommended, and Christopher Awdry's book will act as the perfect companion!
