Terry Gough's original series of illustrated books on the lines of the old Southern Railway in the 1950s and 1960s, the twilight years of steam, are justly regarded as classics. Having first been published by Oxford Publishing Ltd They have been out of print for too long, so The NOSTALGIA Collection is proud to be reissuing them in paperback format. However this volume is BRAND NEW - the one that got away as it were! Oxford Publishing Ltd never published this last and completing volume in the series. This volume focuses on steam at work in the London Area and will be published in hardcover.
In the 1920s and 1930s the Southern Railway was one of the pioneers of electrification, and the Southern Region, its BR successor, continued the process. Inevitably, steam locomotion was thrown onto the defensive. In the early 1950s Terry Gough realised that steam would soon just be a memory, and he spent the best part of twenty years photographing live steam on the old Southern network. He thus went on to create a superb archive which formed the basis for his renowned series of books devoted to the lines of the old Southern Railway, first published by Oxford Publishing Co in the late 1980s. but never completed this being the missing link! The NOSTALGIA Collection is proud to be publishing this brand new volume in hardback format as part of the 'Southern Railway Reflections' series.
