Les Nixon took his first pictures of steam locomotives over 40 years ago. His serious study of railway photography coincided with the massive modernisation program of the early to mid 1960s. Atmospheric and evocative pictures feature prominently in this volume, which embraces a broad spectrum of style and mood, including principally latterday BR steam with tantalising glimpses back into the 1950s.
Most of the pictures have not been published before, and range widely from the author’s native Yorkshire and the North of England generally, to Scotland, London, Southern England and the Isle of Wight. All possess a strongly poignant flavour that sums up perfectly the twilight years of British steam - part exhilaration, part sadness.
Here is a volume that presents Les' own photographs in stunning clarity. Here then is the railway photographers art at its very best.
