Following on from the success of the first two volumes of 'Dawn of the Diesels', John Spencer Gilks has put together another collection of previously unseen photographs which capture the early days of diesel locomotives and multiple units on lines which are now long gone. The new diesel era overlapped with the demise of steam, and the speed and extent of changes to our railway network prompted the author to capture this changing scene as quickly as possible. The transitional period fascinated John Gilks and whilst others mourned the end of steam, he endeavoured to capture as much of this new phenomenon as possible and it is on these pages that his 36,000 mile epic is reflected.
The photographs highlight the stark contrasts between the diesel and steam scene and this book will be insightful to both the railway enthusiast and the industrial historian.
The book draws on:
• Main-line diesels • One-coach trains • Station architecture • Branch-line termini • Signals and signal boxes • Viaducts and bridges • Railwaymen •
• INCLUDES 32 PAGES IN FULL COLOUR •
