An avid railway enthusiast since childhood, Barry Freeman’s twin loves of art and railways are reflected in his painstakingly detailed yet superbly evocative paintings. His insistence upon accuracy means that months of research is undertaken on the locations and the trains, then each painting takes at least two months to complete. Thus his paintings capture the very essence of the grandeur of the steam locomotive at work – the romance, the elegance, the scenery and the atmosphere are all captured with breathtaking reality.
This is the first book to bring together a collection of his railway paintings – more than 40 in all – reproduced in full colour and each accompanied by notes on the origin, research and execution of the work written by the artist himself.
‘Not all railway artists can combine technical verisimilitude with an air of grandeur in this way. In short, Barry Freeman seems to know exactly what the romance of steam means to many of us.’
