Railways have permeated Michael Carrier’s life for as long as he can remember. His father was a ‘Midland’ man, working for the LMS, and his love of and fascination for all things railway was soon communicated to his son, who also subsequently enjoyed a career on the railways. During the pre-nationalisation ‘Grouping’ years of the 1920s and ’30s, Frank Carrier took many superb photographs of locomotives and trains, and because of his job was able to reach vantage points denied to the ordinary enthusiast. The result is an exciting selection of more than 200 rare views frozen in time and showing many vintage locomotives that had long since disappeared by the time railway photography became a more widespread pastime in the 1950s.
The photographs are divided geographically, and while Frank Carrier’s affections always lay with Midland matters, the pictures cover all areas of the country. Expertly printed from film and glass plate negatives, they open a window on a railway era that was to prove the swansong of the private railway companies in Britain during the halcyon days prior to the Second World War.
