The North East is an area steeped in 20th Century industrial heritage, and as with most parts of the country the 1960s saw a consideral reduction in the extensive railway network - under the infamous Beeching Plan. Lines were ripped up, buildings fell into disrepair and the infrastructure as a whole fell into serious decline.
The closure of collieries, once the throbbing heart of the North East and the source of considerable rail-borne freight followed during the 70s and 80s. These events were to change the landscape of the area on a massive scale.
Mike set out on a personal crusade to explore the changing envronment and to record what he found in both words and pictures. The intention was to record the trips as a personal log; however, literally hundreds of pages later the project has become a unique and detailed record. This volume cannot hope to include every word - that would need several volumes. Instead Mike has selected a number of trips and, using his own pictures coupled with pictures taken in the past and detailed extracts from Ordnance Survey maps, he has compiled a vivid picture of the rich heritage of the North East - route and branch!
Mike, now retired, lives in Wolverhampton and continues his explorations - having broadened his areas of investigation to cover other areas of the country!
