A fascinating pictorial record of the Rhymney Railway at a time when the valleys of South Wales were a major coal producer for the rest of the world. From the mid nineteenth century well into the twentieth, coal mining and heavy industry were synonymous with South Wales. Colossal tonnages were produced and transported to the docks along a complex network of branch lines - one such line being the Rhymney Railway. Main line services started from Rhymney to Cardiff on 1st August 1871. Long before then, however, dock branch lines were open for freight and goods traffic, establishing competition for the existing Taff Vale Railway. In its heyday the railway was carrying around 9 million tons of goods annually along 62 miles of track down to the docks, the vast majority of which was coal. In this volume, the author looks at branch lines including: The Rhymney Bridge Branch * The Bute East Docks Branch * The Walnut Tree Branch * The Aber Branch * The Caerphilly Branch * The Cylla Branch * The Darron and Di

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the author now lives in Portland, Dorset with his wife Linda. Having served in the Army for 3 years, he settled in Wales before moving to Dorset 12 years ago. He has served as a Prison Officer for almost 20 years and has also written 'The Newport Docks and Alexandra Railway Company' and The Rhymney Railway Volume 1 for Silver Link Publishing Ltd
