A highly illustrated survey of the great Newport Docks and its rail link to the Glamorganshire hinterland in the days when 'King Coal' ruled in South Wales. John Hutton relates the epic story of how millions of tons of high-quality coal from the Merthyr, Aberdare and Rhondda Valleys reached the wider world via the Alexandra Docks complex in Newport. Coal was the life blood of the South Wales economy from the mid nineteenth century until well into the twentieth , and at the height of the Steam Age Welsh coal was in demand all over the world. A significant proportion of the output of the great Glamorganshire coalfields - the Merthyr, Aberdare and Rhondda Valleys - was carried by rail to the Alexandra Docks complex at Newport and from there exported to every continent. In this highly illustrated book - packed with period photographs, maps, plans and other ephemera - John Hutton relates the epic story. Illustrated with a wealth of period pictures - many dating back to the early years of the last century
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the author now lives in Portland, Dorset with his wife Linda. Having served in the Army for 3 years, he settled in Wales before moving to Dorset 12 years ago.
John has also written 'The Rhymney Railway Volume 1' and The Rhymney Railway Volume 2 for Silver Link Publishing Ltd
