As steam gave way to diesel throughout the 1950s and 1960s, many railway photographers felt the romance was over and stopped photographing trains altogether. Happily for his many admirers, John Gilks shrugged his shoulders and continued with his labour of love - photographing railways in action all over the country. Consequently, he built up a marvellous archive of early diesel views, which forms the basis of this superb album.
The period feel of this remarkable enterprise is brought home when one looks at stunning photographs of lines that were subsequently closed during the Beeching era, and at pictures of stations that would have still been recognisable to their original builders! As the decades pass, and the 'Green Diesel Era' appears increasingly remote, so the interest in the first generation of diesel locomotives and multiple units grows. Who would have thought that these pioneers would now command so strong a nostalgic following?
