HEAVO, HEAVO, LASH UP AND STOW
A Memoir of an East Ender's War
By Ken Kimberley

£16.99 +p&p

As Oi Jimmy Knacker reached it's conclusion Ken found himself in the midst of war torn London - indeed his childhood home had just been flattened along with his beloved model railway! It was a time of decision for Ken as we learn in the opening chapters of Heavo, Heavo, Lash Up and Stow. Leaving his office job Ken decides to join up and thus embarks on a voyage of discovery and enlightenment with His Majesty's Navy Leaving the capital behind he travels north and west to Pwllheli and the Butlin's holiday camp. This was far from a holiday of course, the camp having been taken over as a training camp for new recruits. Following training Ken returns south to Chatham where all too quickly he learns that he is to be posted to Atlantic convoy escort duties and quickly travels north again to join his first ship at Liverpool docks. 'Join the Navy and see the World' goes the famous saying. Well in Ken's case it certainly proved to be true! As this fine volume unfolds we find Ken in all sorts of places including the USA, Canada, Panama, Hong Kong and of course good old Blighty. Once again Ken relates his memories in text and wonderful water colours throughout. The result is as ever a book to read from cover to cover or to dip in to read a story at a time but above all perhaps, a book to treasure.
