In the final volume of his comprehensive trilogy, John Hutton tells the story of the Cardiff Railway, a 6½-mile branch to the docks opened in 1909 whose development was stifled by its rival, the Taff Vale Railway, until both became part of the GWR in 1922. Using more than 250 photographs, maps and items of ephemera, he also describes the docks and railway staff, engine sheds, and the dramatic story of the docks during the Second World War, when they became an obvious target for the Luftwaffe.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the author now lives in Portland, Dorset with his wife Linda. Having served in the Army for 3 years, he settled in Wales before moving to Dorset 12 years ago.
