Join Gateshead historian Ken Groundwater on a nostalgic journey down both banks of the mighty Tyne, from Scotswood in the west to Tynemouth in the east. His marvellous album of period photographs, dating from late Victorian times to the recent past, captures the shipbuilding and shipping industries at their peak.
These images evoke a time when the river resounded with the din of the riveters hammers, and shipyards were to be seen at every bend and on both sides. It was a time when thousands of Tynesiders worked in these yards turning out all kinds of ships, from ferries and colliers to elegant ocean liners and powerful warships. It was a time when the docks, ports and basins buzzed with river and ocean-going traffic.
Today, much of that world has gone, but it lives on in this handsome album which will appeal to locals, shipping enthusiasts and social historians alike
